Bruster’s Ice Cream

March 22, 2024 by Carolyn Leave a Comment

We happened to stop at Bruster’s on Staples Mill because our friend was in town visiting, and we all wanted ice cream. He had lived in a neighborhood near Cross Ridge, so he knew the area well and suggested Bruster’s.

We agreed before we realized it’s an outdoor place – a walk-up window type ice cream shop. This was an evening in February. Brrr. What are we thinking?

But apparently we weren’t the only one thinking Bruster’s ice cream, because there were already people in line when we got there, and they had a steady stream of customers while we waited for our orders. Even after we got our cones, we stood chatting with another customer for several minutes and more folks came to shiver in the chilled night air to buy ice cream.

Tasting my double scoop cone (chocolate raspberry truffle and double chocolate chunk) I started to understand why an ice cream place was busy on a winter evening. And by the way, none of these customers were kids. But it made me feel like a kid, standing there outside with my friends, enjoying what is typically a summer treat.

I didn’t take any photos of my ice cream that evening. (I know, right? What was I thinking?) But why is that ice cream so good? I am not a connoisseur of anything, really, so I can’t identify what exactly made the difference for me. It was perhaps a smoothness in the cream, and the flavors – not to mention the sugar buzz – that just made eating that ice cream cone outdoors in February a thing worth doing.

Can you imagine how good it would be in a warm month? Definitely going back. Hopefully not when I’m on a diet.

Deal alert: One of the customers there that night told me, and I saw on their Instagram too, Brusters offers banana splits for half-price on Thursday when you bring your own banana!
